Protecting Credit Unions in Tax Policy Discussions

CrossState continues to advocate for the protection of credit unions and their members as Congress gears up for comprehensive tax reform. Yesterday, CrossState’s Christina Mihalik, SVP of Government Relations; Chris Woods, VP, CSR & Governmental Affairs Director for TruMark Financial; and Brad Thaler, VP of Legislative Affairs for America’s Credit Unions, met with Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA-1) in Washington, D.C.

Discussions centered on the critical importance of preserving the federal tax exemption for credit unions amid ongoing tax policy debates. As policymakers consider revenue options to offset reform costs, we must ensure credit unions remain protected. We also took the opportunity to thank Fitzpatrick for his continued support and sponsorship of the Veterans Members Business Loans Act (H.R. 507), which would exempt loans made to veterans from the 12.25% credit union member business lending (MBL) cap.

This meeting is part of a broader engagement strategy, with additional visits planned to key members of the House Ways and Means Committee, including five representatives from Pennsylvania’s congressional delegation. These conversations reinforce the essential role credit unions play in serving their members and communities.

While there is no immediate call to mobilize credit union members, we encourage all advocates to stay engaged and ready to act. You can help by:
