CrossState’s Conway Shares Remarks, Highlights Importance of State Advocacy at 2024 GAC

Yesterday, CrossState President & CEO, Patrick Conway opened the afternoon general session at the 2024 Governmental Affairs Conference. Conway was joined on stage by League Presidents from across the nation as a visual reminder of the strength and solidarity of the League System.

As League President and Chair of AACUL, Conway emphasized that the effectiveness of credit unions on Capitol Hill is rooted in their efforts within their respective states. He stressed the effectiveness of Capitol Hill lies in credit unions activities at home, and emphasized the importance of state advocacy, as it is an integral component of robust federal advocacy.

In his remarks, Conway highlighted the quantifiable impact that states have made in lobbying in favor of credit unions, sharing, “Together, we monitored nearly 4,000 state bills in 2023. Of those, League’s successfully defeated harmful bills that would have regulated interchange, imposed burdensome data privacy requirements, created a state-level version of the CFPB, and removed lienholder protections for credit unions.

“We also championed helpful state legislation that promotes important financial literacy requirements, enhances and modernizes credit union charters, permits public deposits at credit unions, protects seniors and credit union members from fraud, allows for electronic titling, and improves remote notary services.”

Conway concluded his remarks by drawing attention to AACUL’s commitment to collective advocacy efforts and thanked credit unions for their continued engagement in successful state advocacy and advancing a vibrant credit union system.
